Did you hear the Oscars are this weekend? Just kidding. It's arguably the most popular night of the movie industry, and one that elicits celebrations and competitions across workplaces, restaurants, bars and living rooms around the world.
Our kids are at an age now where they're dipping their toes into everything pop culture. It's so fascinating to see their likes and dislikes, and listen to their opinions on what makes a good movie. We've always been a movie-loving family, with Ben now a budding director as I've discovered he's been hauling our little flip video camera to school to make mini-movies of his friends on the playground (side note: ten year old boys are interesting and most peculiar little group).
So, to celebrate everything cinema I came up with these cupcakes. I used a simple red velvet (to play on the red carpet) cupcake, chocolate and vanilla icing to represent the black-tie affair, gold sugar topping as a nod to Oscar himself, and simple cardstock skewers highlighting the top movies of 2010 (according to the Academy).
I love to see how creative I can get using what's on hand in this house. These little tags were made using a quick document I put together on the computer, some black card stock, spray adhesive, a hole punch and skewers picked up in Chinatown for $1/bag.
As a family we came up with the images to represent the movies, and I found some free clipart online to insert into my word document (I definitely have no graphic design ability). Once the sheet was printed, I glued it to some black cardstock, cut the images into 2 x 3 rectangles, hole punched the top and bottom and added a skewer. They were placed into the cupcake and made for instant themed treat.
Are you watching the Oscars this year? What movie did you like best? Mine is highlighted in one of the photos.

Well, I, for one, did not know the Oscars are tonight. But those cupcakes do make me hungry!

Those look delicious! I haven't had the chance to see many of the movies yet...I am dying to see The King's Speech and Black Swan.
Have fun Sunday night.
