Eleven years ago today my first baby was born. How crazy is that? I have no idea where the years have gone, but they have been good and fun, and I can't possibly imagine what life would be like without Ben (or his brother).
To celebrate we held a family brunch on Sunday. Three generations, from both sides of the family, gathered for a late morning meal of sausage and cheddar and asparagus and caramelized onion frittatas, salad, fruit, lemon-cranberry scones, maple-glazed ham, and croissants. Since a cake didn't seem fitting for breakfast, but the boy needed a birthday treat, I made a rainbow doughnut tower for happy birthday singing and candle blowing.
I'm short on time today for I'm making a special nutella, peanut butter and tortilla wrap for breakfast for this birthday boy of mine. Instead of typing it, I'm going to direct you to the recipe I used for the doughnuts. It's worked perfectly both times I've tried it, and it's much easier than you might expect homemade doughnuts to be. I didn't use the glaze in the recipe though, as it was coffee based, and while fine for the adults I didn't think it was great for the kids. Instead I used Alton Brown's doughnut glaze recipe and it worked perfectly.
Happy Birthday, Ben. I can only imagine how much more awesome you will be over the next eleven years.

oh my gosh! Such a fun idea for the birthday treat. Happy birthday to the birthday boy :)
