This is the last post in my homemade gifts/Canada Day entertaining series.
We made this DIY ice cream sundae kit for friends. We thought it would be super fun for them to take to their cottage. All they need to supply is the ice cream, and they will be set for some sundae making fun.
I picked up some waffle cone bowls, sugar cones and assorted candies and repackaged everything in clear cello bags with colourful labels and bakers twine. I then made some homemade chocolate sauce, jarred it, and packaged everything together in a little gift box. It was so simple to put together and the recipients were thrilled, which was the whole point.
We're all officially on summer vacation now and plan on spending the rest of this week curled up watching movies, play board games, roasting marshmallows and swimming. Come back tomorrow to see if you're a winner in the Cadbury bicycle factory giveaway.
Easy Chocolate Sauce
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3 tablespoon of butter
- 3 tablespoons corn syrup
- 6 oz chocolate chips
Combine cream, butter and corn syrup in a small saucepan and heat until the butter had melted and the sauce is almost boiling.
Remove from the heat and add the chocolate, stirring until melted. Cool to lukewarm and spoon into glass jars. Cover with a tight fitting lid and store in the fridge.
To use, remove from the fridge and let it sit out at room temperature for 1 hour prior to serving, or heat for 15 seconds in the microwave.

This is such a wonderful idea. I have a friend in Russia who loves ice cream sundaes, but she can't find all of these products. I can't wait to box one of these kits up to send to her. Thanks for sharing your idea.

Hi Kristin - I didnt like to labels (sorry!), but you can easily make them in Word, which is what I did.

No matter what the recipe's instructions say, when tempering egg yolks for custard-based ice creams, never pour more than 3 or 4 tablespoons of hot cream into the yolks before whisking them back into the cream. And go very slowly. Nothing is worse then creating an accidental scramble.

That's such a cute idea!! I bought ice cream bowls a while back and was beyond bummed when I got home and they were all broken :( Some still useable and still edible but not whole and pretty. So sad. Love that you repackaged everything too - makes it that much prettier and thoughtful.

Ok, I know I am behind the curve here (time wise), just found your post via Living on a Dime. This is a darling and very clever idea, I will be using this for Christmas gift giving. Thank you so much.

so, you say to store the fudge sauce in the fridge...would it spoil if i made it, packaged it and mailed it as a Christmas gift? say....being unrefrigerated for a week or so?
Posted by: maria | 10/29/2011 at 02:54 PM
I was also wondering about the fudge sauce? If it's in the jar and then wrapped up for a few days, is it going to spoil?

Is this a gift you would give to a kid?

don't forget about the wind energy company that decided to take it's business elsewhere when it became apparent that Wisconsin (uh...I mean Walker) wasn't interested in this form of renewable energy.

where did you get your cello bags and the box that you put it all in? I love this idea for neighbor gifts.

Hi Mackenzie - Thanks so much. I just picked up the cello bags at a party supply store and the box is left over from a Christmas gift last year.

I just made this for my father in law for Christmas. He is elderly and does not get out to the store much but he loves ice cream. I made a "coupon" for two containers of ice cream. He writes what flavors he wants on the coupon and we will get it from the store and bring it to him. Thanks for such a cute idea. I know this gift will be a hit. :-)

Yes I'll 3rd that question...
was thinking of making this for one of my nephews for Christmas but I was wondering about the fudge sauce.... will it spoil if left out?

Also, another question...
How did you do the labels for the sauce jars? They are circle labels it looks like.

I found the perfect place for my needs. Contains wonderful and useful messages. I have read most of them and has a lot of them.
