Yesterday was National Doughnut Day. Did you know? Since 1938, Doughnut Day has been celebrated on the first Thursday of June as a way to honor the women who fed doughnuts to soldiers during the world wars.
We like doughnuts well enough, but don't really go out of our way to eat them often. I remember when I was little my grandpa would come and visit and bring a dozen doughnuts with him as a treat. If we were lucky enough it was a baker's dozen which meant there were thirteen pieces of fried dough to enjoy as opposed to the traditional twelve.
We have made these baked doughnuts before to great success and the next time I give it a go I'm going to try these fried lovelies. The doughnut pictued above came from a small farmer's market at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in NYC. Hands down the best one I've ever had.
Do you like doughnuts? How about your kids? What are you favourite kinds and favourite places to buy them from?
