My very favourite way to adorn a cake, or group of cupcakes, is with crafted bunting or decorated skewers. I can definitely appreciate the work that goes into icing a cake to sugary perfection, and even love how most of them look, but for me the simplicity of these homemade decorations really allows the baked goods to shine through on their own, without a massive amount of sweet icing added to the top.
I think the appeal of this form of cake decorating is that it also caters to the DIY-er in me. I love to work with paper, and make party decorations, and this methods allows me to cook and craft simultaneously, doing two of my favourite things. (Fun fact: I do have a certification in cake decorating but I almost never use it!).
Another great thing about cake buntings are that they can be easily customized to match the look of any party theme or special occasion. For Christmas, red, green gold and silver decorations can be made, and at Halloween orange pumpkins can hang from black ribbon. Or little skulls could dangle from strung-up spider webs. Ahh... so many possibilities.
Cute ideas and some tasty looking looking cakes and cupcakes :)
