The days are just whizzing by, despite our attempts to slow down the pace. I can't believe it's nearly the end of July already, and the lone back-to-school ad I saw last week reminded me that the kids are only home for another six weeks (although when put that way, it seems like an awfully long time).
One of the things we've been most looking forward to this month is the summer Olympics, which kick off this coming Friday. All of us have preferred events that we're looking forward to seeing, and the kids are inspired to create the Scott Family Summer Games for us, which I hear is going to include activities like pudding eating contests (with no hands), tetherball and many other non-traditional competitions. I'm looking forward to seeing what I get roped into doing, and which one of us ends up the gold medal winner.
If my kids had a summer birthday I would certainly host an Olympic-themed celebration for them this year. I put together this party for Savvy Mom earlier in the month, and when I was working away I realized that we don't have to have a birthday in order to have a party.
In fact, the ultimate summer boredom buster could be letting the kids plan their own summer games for themselves and a few friends. I say hold the events in your backyard or neighbourhood park, and offer a buffet of foods inspired by the cuisine of other countries, which is exactly what I did here.
Japan is represented by a platter of candy sushi. England is part of the party (of course!) with this sweet take on bangers and mash, and France is also competing in the food department with a sophisticated tray of Brie and crackers. As you can see above, team Canada is clearly going to be the winner with their strawberries and cream cake, and if you want to seem impartial to which country you're rooting for, you can always just serve the Olympic torch cupcakes or fruity salad rings.
Would you host a party for the kids even if there was nothing to celebrate but the fact that it's summer? Find the rest of the details over on this month's edition of Party Savvy!
How brilliant is this? Love every single one of these ideas! Just be careful the IOC doesn't find out ...

That’s so cool! It’s a perfect theme to celebrate with while learning something new about other countries. I like the little flags on and the variation of food! =) And yes, summer games are the perfect activity for this kind of birthday party. I’m sure your kids are going to love it.
